Every musician’s story has twists and turns — and for Chuck Lazer of Victoria, BC, that path has included guitar in the ’70s and ’80s, washtub bass in a university jug band, and now a full embrace of bass guitar. After retiring from a career in TV writing and golf, Chuck decided it was time to finally strip music down to what he loved most: rhythm, harmony, and the irresistible pull of the bass.
These days, Chuck plays with Pepper Sprouts, a six-piece group that blends country, gypsy jazz, and Latin grooves. Holding down the low end alongside guitars, violin, vocals, and percussion, he thrives on the challenge of variety and the joy of keeping a band moving. His goal? To keep getting more solid with walking lines, pentatonics, and the art of driving a combo.

What really defines Chuck’s story is the mindset shift: “I’m a musician now.” That realization has fueled his growth, and with support from Bass Lab PLUS (and guidance from Coach Sian Unwin), he’s learned to see mistakes as stepping stones. One of Sian’s encouragements sticks with him — “You’re a better bass player than you think you are.” A simple phrase, but the perfect antidote to the self-doubt all musicians face.

Where are you based?
Victoria, BC, Canada.
How long have you been playing bass?
10–12 years.
Who are your influences?
Too many to name — Charlie Haden, Ray Brown, Ron Carter, Jaco, Paul Chambers, Mingus… and yes, Sting and Paul McCartney too.
First song you learned?
“Stand by Me.” When I started lessons? “Day Tripper.”
Current band/project?
Pepper Sprouts — we play country, gypsy, and Latin jazz with a six-piece lineup.
Next goal with bass?
More solid walking, pentatonics, and driving a combo.
How has Bass Lab PLUS helped?
It’s always providing lessons and tips that push me forward. And Sian’s encouragement reminds me to focus on what I can do.
