A New Way to Learn: Laurel’s Ear-Training Success with Hear It Play It

We're constantly inspired by the dedication and growth of our students here at eBassGuitar.

Today, we’re excited to share Laurel’s journey, who transformed her bass playing through Bass Lab PLUS and our Hear It Play It program.

"My initial expectations were to play a lot, listen more, and rely less on reading music. The program turned out to be exactly what I needed and wanted to improve my skills."

After joining the Hear It Play It program, this is Laurel playing "Look Of Love" by Gladys Knight.

Brilliant ... don't you think?

Here's the summary of the interview...

James: Hey Laurel, can you tell us a little bit about your background playing the bass guitar?

Laurel:
I started during COVID because I needed something to occupy my time in quarantine. I have a background in piano, but I didn't have any bass experience.

James: Cool. So what motivated you to join the Hear It Play It program?

Laurel:
I realized that I didn't have another lifetime to dedicate to bass like I did with piano. I needed to kickstart my bass playing and knew I wouldn't be motivated without a structured program like Hear It Play It.

James: What were your initial expectations of Hear It Play It?

Laurel:
My initial expectations were to play a lot, listen more, and rely less on reading music. It turned out to be exactly what I needed and wanted.

James: Can you describe some of the biggest wins or breakthroughs you had in the Hear It Play It program?

Laurel:
The biggest realization was understanding diatonic harmony, which was mind-blowing. It took time, but the lessons constantly referenced this concept, helping me understand its importance in bass playing.

James: What specific skills or techniques have improved most through the program?

Laurel:
My knowledge of the fretboard improved significantly, along with my technique. Your demonstrations were incredibly helpful, and by imitating them, I learned a lot without even realizing it.

James: Are there any particular songs or bass lines you're especially proud of mastering?

Laurel:
I loved the variety of genres covered in the program. I gravitated towards Motown, soul, and R&B because they allow for personal expression. The Marvin Gaye song we worked on really spoke to me.

"My knowledge of the fretboard improved significantly, along with my technique."

James: How has the Hear It Play It program changed your approach to learning and playing the bass?

Laurel:
It changed my approach completely. I now spend more time listening to music, understanding the basic structure, and focusing on how to move between chords. Listening has become a big part of my learning process.

James: In what ways has your musical ear developed as a result of the program?

Laurel:
I used to struggle to hear the bassline in songs, but now it's all I hear. The program helped me zero in on the bass, and it's been life-changing. I can now listen to and understand basslines much better.

James: Can you share your experience working with your one-to-one coach, Freddie? How did he help you progress during the program?

Laurel:
Freddie was my secondary rock. He provided excellent guidance and answered all my questions. The recorded sessions were invaluable for reviewing information. His suggestions and demonstrations kept me focused and motivated.

James: What did you enjoy the most about the weekly group coaching sessions?

Laurel:
I enjoyed the variety of people and coaches who shared their insights. The collaborative environment was motivating, and hearing others' questions often answered my own. The group support encouraged me to record and share my progress.

James: How would you describe your experience with the support and guidance from myself and the eBassGuitar Team?

Laurel:
A+++. The Hear It Play It program is perfect. The detailed, systematic approach of the lessons was fantastic. The variety of difficulty levels and the bonus videos were incredibly helpful. I can't recommend this program enough.

James: Would you recommend the Hear It Play It program to other bass players? Why or why not?

Laurel:
Absolutely. As an instructional designer, I recognize good instruction. This course covers different learning styles and theories comprehensively. It's a goldmine of information, and I would recommend it to anyone looking to improve their bass playing.

James: Is there anything else you'd like to share about your experience with the Hear It Play It program?

Laurel:
I have so much motivation to keep learning and evolving. The program gave me a well-rounded foundation, confidence, and creativity. I hope there’s a sequel because there's always more to learn.

James: Do you have any advice for students who are about to start the Hear It Play It program?

Laurel:
Clear your calendar and dig into the material. Play along with the demos, listen to music, and practice regularly. There's a wealth of information, and if you commit to it, you'll be very happy with the results.
