Welcome to the very first edition of the Bass Lab PLUS Student Spotlight. A new space where we shine a light on the incredible journeys of fellow bass players in our community.
We believe every player has a story worth sharing. It doesn’t matter if you’re just starting out or have decades of experience behind you. This month, we’re kicking things off with an inspiring and soulful member who’s been making waves (and grooves!) in the community…
If you’re active inside The Clubroom (Bass Lab PLUS Exclusive Forum), you must have already met Bob Klein. Born and raised in New Jersey, now soaking up the sun in Southern California, he’s living proof that musical passion never fades. Though he’s only been seriously playing bass for the last three and a half years, his love for music spans a lifetime.
Bob’s musical journey started at the age of 10 in his school music program, picking up the violin before quickly moving to the clarinet and adding the oboe in high school. But it wasn’t just orchestral instruments that caught his attention. A kid across the street named Jesse played electric guitar, sparking Bob’s curiosity and pulling him into the world of rock music.
Although Bob’s parents gave him an acoustic guitar, formal lessons were short-lived. That didn’t stop him. Throughout the years, he explored piano, with guidance from his Aunt Audrey, learning chords and melodies by feel, and also dabbled with a child-sized organ.

Then came a defining moment in 1970. Bob was asked by a few fellow classmates to play bass in a band they were forming. Despite having no bass experience, he eagerly accepted, purchased a Fender bass, and practiced with fellow band members. But before long, Bob was replaced and sold his bass to his successor. Though the experience stung, it planted a seed.

Fast-forward five decades when Bob finally answered the call again. He bought a Hagstrom Viking short-scale bass and reignited his musical fire, this time on his own terms. Today, Bob plays with the same curiosity that started it all, grounded by years of experience, growth, and now, a community to share it with. Let’s further get to know Bob from the interview below…
What do you do outside of playing bass (job, hobbies, interests)?
Well, that’s a loaded question! Since retiring in October 2022 after 42 years in financial services, the last 33 running my own firm, I’ve been fortunate to pursue music full-time. I’ve continued playing piano, guitar, and bass, and even took up drums and singing through Musora's platforms. I also completed seven online audio recording courses, and auditioned for, and was selected to perform in, Musora’s "Everyday Musician" series in Vancouver playing bass. That was an incredible highlight!

Outside of music, I love spending time with my wife Nira, including walks on the beach and travel. I also enjoy reading and skiing.

Paul McCartney.
Favorite band of all time?
The Beatles.
First song you ever learned?
On bass, Down On The Corner by Creedence Clearwater Revival way back in 1970!

What’s your next goal with bass guitar?
To complete the Hear It Play It program here at eBassGuitar. I’m currently on module 4 of 8 and learning to perform and record songs by ear. No sheet music!
What kind of music would you like to play if you were in a band?
Classic rock and roll, and rhythm and blues.

How do you stay motivated to practice and improve?
Simple: music is my childhood passion. I dedicate around 50 hours a week to music-related activities. I thrive on setting goals, staying organized, and constantly learning. Especially across all four instruments I study (bass, piano, guitar, drums) and singing. I’ve learned that patience is key, especially when recording and submitting songs. Long-term? I just want to keep growing and playing as long as I can.
How has being a part of Bass Lab PLUS helped shape your bass playing?
I honestly can’t believe how much I’ve grown since joining just a year ago. Bass Lab PLUS offers unmatched depth, structure, and value. James Eager’s approach is the perfect fit for me. The variety of genres, structured courses (like Fretboard Fundamentals, Music Theory Bootcamp, and Slap Bass Explosion), and live sessions have all been game-changers.
On top of that, the opportunities to record and submit songs from level certificates to monthly competitions as well as the Hear It Play It program have helped me complete 20 song recordings in under a year! The sense of progress is incredible.

Take full advantage of everything here. It’s all designed to help you grow, no matter where you’re starting from. If you’re nervous about things like monthly song competitions, I get it, I was too. But after I won my first one, I was hooked!
