Sometimes a bass journey spark comes from childhood lessons, sometimes from a jam session., and sometimes from seeing what a group really needs. For Richard Beck, from just outside Houston, Texas, that spark was realizing his ukulele club needed a bassist. In April 2024, he picked up his very first bass and hasn’t looked back since.
Richard’s story is one of steady musical curiosity. As a kid, he played piano, trombone, and sang in choirs. Later, he sang in church groups and strummed a few guitar chords before diving into ukulele. That path eventually led him to bass, where the supportive and rhythmic role immediately clicked. Now, as part of the Five O’Clock PHlock Throw Down Jamm Band (yes, you can tell they like to have fun with the name!), Richard holds down everything from classic hits to country grooves alongside his Parrot Head club.
When he’s not making music, Richard keeps busy with a wide range of creative hobbies from 3D printing to programming holiday light shows proving that learning never really stops. Bass Lab PLUS has helped him gain confidence beyond just root notes, and he’s already experimenting with 3rds, 5ths, and approach notes to add more depth to his lines. It’s a journey of discovery, one note at a time, and Richard’s enthusiasm for growth makes his story one to celebrate.

Where are you based?
I live NNW of Houston, Texas, USA.
How long have you been playing bass?
I purchased my first (and only, so far) bass in April of 2024.
Who are your musical influences?
I don’t really have a favorite yet — but the bassist I remember often seeing on album credits is Leland Sklar.
Favorite band?
Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band.
First song you learned on bass?
Probably The Weight. Though when I played it, the guitarist said it was “too busy!”
Current band/project?
I play with the Five O’Clock PHlock Throw Down Jamm Band, part of the Parrot Head club. We cover a range of popular songs from the ’60s through the ’80s, with some country mixed in.

What’s your next goal with bass?
To get comfortable with faster playing — especially 8th-note riffs.
