Hey, James here!

Today, I want to share a fantastic bass drill inspired by the incredible Joe Dart. This exercise will help you expand your fretboard knowledge, develop your musical ear, and have some serious fun in the process!

A Quick Story from My Bass Journey

Back in 2016, I started eBassGuitar from a humble third bedroom with just an iPhone and a laptop. Fast forward a year, I was fortunate enough to work with Scott’s Bass Lessons, where I learned a lot about the power of the bass community and the importance of sharing knowledge. Inspired by that spirit of giving, today's lesson is a tribute to another fantastic bass educator, Ariane Cap, who shared an incredible drill based on Joe Dart’s famous bass line from "I Lost My Treble."

The Drill: Building on Joe Dart's Bass Line

Ariane's lesson took one of Joe Dart's licks and put it through the circle of fifths, a powerful exercise that expands your fretboard knowledge and challenges your musical thinking. I practised this drill for a few weeks, and it inspired me to create my own lick based on Joe Dart’s style.

Now, I want to share this riff with you and show you how to play it around the circle of fifths. This will help you develop better fretboard awareness and get you thinking ahead as you play.

What You’ll Learn

  • The Original Joe Dart Bass Line: See the inspiration behind the drill and how it fits into the "I Lost My Treble" groove.
  • My Adaptation of Joe's Lick: Learn a new riff that combines elements from Joe Dart’s fills, and see how you can make it your own.
  • Transposing Around the Circle of Fifths: Practice moving the riff through all 12 keys to master fretboard navigation and enhance your musicality.

Free PDF with Notation

To help you master this drill, I've created a free PDF with all the notes written out in standard notation and tab. Click the button below to grab your copy and start practicing!
