When you think of world-class bass tone, one name inevitably comes up: Roger Sadowsky. Known for crafting instruments played by icons like Marcus Miller and Jason Newsted, Roger has spent over 45 years shaping not just the sound of modern bass—but also how we think about building, playing, and connecting through music.

But in our in-depth conversation with Roger, we went deeper than pickups and preamps. This was about values, philosophy, and the human side of craftsmanship. Here are some highlights and takeaways from a rare interview with one of bass guitar's most influential voices.

"I'm not a luthier. I'm a guitar maker."

Roger opens the conversation by immediately breaking expectations. While many would be proud of the title "luthier," he sees it as pretentious. For him, it's not about ego or image—it's about making great instruments for real people.

From Folk Guitar to Fender Mods

Roger started out as a folk fingerpicker, disillusioned with his psychobiology PhD program. That creative spark led him to acoustic guitar building in the early 1970s. But by the time he opened his New York shop in 1979, there was no real market for handmade acoustics.

So he pivoted—repairing and modifying electric guitars and basses for New York City's top session musicians. And it was in this scene that he made a name for himself.

Tone Starts With the Wood

One of the biggest takeaways? Roger believes the best-sounding basses are the ones that sound great acoustically, unplugged. He quickly noticed that lighter instruments tended to resonate better and, ultimately, sound better when amplified.

"I would even tell players: Go to the shop, grab three of the same model, and pick the one that sounds best acoustically."

This philosophy led to his signature use of chambered bodies and lightweight tonewoods.

The Preamp That Changed Everything

Roger's work with Marcus Miller in the late '70s and early '80s helped shape what would become a legendary tone. He installed one of the first active preamps in Marcus's Jazz Bass, and the results were immediate.

"Make this the best bass you can," Marcus told him. And he did.

Since then, the Sadowsky preamp has become one of the most revered in the industry.

No Endorsements. No Exceptions.

One of Roger's most surprising stances? He doesn't give out artist endorsements. Jason Newsted owns 30 Sadowsky basses—27 of which he bought at full price. That commitment to equality and fairness runs through everything Roger does.

"I treat every customer the same. Fame doesn't get you a discount."

The Human Element

More than anything, Roger's passion lies in people. Around 1982, he had a realization: the instruments couldn't love him back. But the players could.

"All the satisfaction in my work comes from the people playing the instruments. That’s who I serve."

The Future with Warwick

Now partnered with Warwick, Sadowsky instruments are more accessible than ever. The MetroExpress line brings high-quality basses into the £1,000/$1,000 range—a move Roger says is about making great instruments available to more players, not compromising on quality.

"I'm not a snob. Not everyone can afford a $6,000 custom build."

Legacy, Without Ego

Roger isn’t building a family dynasty or chasing status. He’s building instruments—and relationships—that last.

Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a touring pro, his message is clear: build with integrity, serve people with heart, and let your work speak for itself.
