Today, we’re diving into one of the most common frustrations I hear from bass players—getting lost on the fretboard.
If you’ve ever frozen up the moment a song moves out of your comfort zone, this is for you.
To celebrate the launch of my brand-new book Fretboard Freedom, I’m sharing 5 simple but powerful fretboard drills—plus 5 killer real-world riffs—that will give you the tools to finally move around the neck with confidence.

What This Lesson Is All About
In this lesson, we’re focusing on one of the most essential tools in a bass player’s toolbox—the minor pentatonic scale. But instead of learning just one “box shape,” I’ll walk you through all five shapes in the key of G minor, with drills and riffs for each.
You’ll learn how to:
- Recognize and play every shape of the minor pentatonic scale
- Turn scale shapes into musical riffs
- Connect the entire fretboard — instead of being stuck in one position
- Use these shapes across styles like rock, funk, blues, country, and more
The 5 Shapes (in G Minor)
Each shape comes with:
- A slow walkthrough
- A fretboard drill
- A simple, tasty riff
- Backing track play-along
Here’s the breakdown:
- Shape 1: The classic “home” position
- Shape 2: Connect the upper fretboard
- Shape 3: Where most players get hazy
- Shape 4: Start shifting laterally
- Shape 5: The full-circle shape—connects back to Shape 1
By the end, you’ll be creating riffs and moving across the neck like a pro.
