I'm currently in the middle of writing eBassGuitar's brand new course, "Fretboard Elevation" and I want to give you a sneak peek at some of the concepts you'll see in there. So in this lesson, I’m going to take you through three techniques that will upgrade your bass playing.
One of the first things I want to share with you is a simple exercise using the G major scale. The exercise involves breaking the scale into patterns of three notes and playing them with a little accent on the first note of each pattern. This will help you explore the scale and get more comfortable with the fretboard.
Now, onto the tips! The first technique involves breaking up the G major scale into patterns. Playing the first three notes (G, A, B), then the next three notes (A, B, C), and so on will help you better understand the major scale. Putting a little accent on the first note of each grouping of three will make it sound more musical.
The second technique involves playing the same exercise on the G-string to help you get comfortable moving up and down the fretboard. There are two ways to play each grouping of three with a position shift. The first way uses extended fingering which may be difficult for some players, while the second way is more musical and easier to execute.
The third technique involves integrating articulations with the left hand or fretting hand. By using hammer-ons and pull-offs, you can create cool effects and add variety to your playing. In the video, I demonstrate how to use these articulations to create a cool-sounding riff that utilizes the techniques from the first two tips.
