Hey, James here!
Every few months, I get asked the same question by members of Bass Lab PLUS: "What's the one thing I could do to dramatically improve my bass playing?"
My answer is always the same—one drill that will stratospherically improve your knowledge of harmony, your fretboard knowledge, and your technique and speed. This drill has everything you need to elevate your bass playing to the next level.
Introducing Diatonic Arpeggios
The drill is called diatonic arpeggios. Knowing these seven arpeggios inside and out forms the basis of 80% of Western music. I’ll show you both a simple version and an advanced version of this drill. Practicing it every single day for 30 days, starting off simply and out of time, will make a noticeable difference in your playing.
How to Practice Diatonic Arpeggios
- Days 1-7: Practice slowly and out of time. Focus on getting to know the fretboard shapes.
- After Day 7: Start making an exercise where you gradually build up your speed and dexterity.
To help you get started, I've written out this drill in a free PDF that accompanies this lesson. You’ll find everything we discuss today written out in standard notation and tab. Click the button below to download it.
