Hey Groove Masters,
James here. Let’s talk about the 4 Note Bass Fill Creator using Dreams by Fleetwood Mac.
I didn’t know if I was going to make it.
I nearly turned right around and got on the first plane home.
It was 6:30am and I was in a foreign country all alone. I didn’t even speak a word of the language.
This was me on August 12th, 2013 at Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok, Thailand.
I’d set off for the trip of a lifetime; just me, a few days worth of clothes and a Lonely Planet Guide.
I’d never done the solo traveling thing before and deep down I wanted to see if I could ‘do it’.
Ahead of me was a few weeks with zero planned - just seeing what was going to happen.
In all honesty the next month was probably the best time of my life and the worst… all at the same time. Bizarre but true.
There are a few things I probably shouldn’t go into too much detail about… but needless to say I experienced everything from ancient temples to all night beach parties. I’ll let your imagination do the rest.
One thing about this trip has stuck with me forever and has made a profound affect on how I teach the bass.
I visited the Island of Ko Tao.
This tiny place is the home of Scuba Diving.
Game for a new experience I booked myself in on a one day DSD course. (Discover Scuba Diving).
Thinking all I’d get was a bit of a swim-around underwater in the local pool… how wrong could I be.
The truth of the matter is, the first time I went under was probably one of THE scariest moments of my life.
I’d never been underwater for more about 15 seconds before… and I thought I was going to freak out.
A few minutes later I had relaxed and had another go at it.
My instructor was awesome. He broke it down into a few simple steps I needed to know.
This time I made it to about 5 minutes underwater in the dive pool.
Then the next time I made it to about 10 minutes.
By the end of the day, I’d done 2 half hour dives in open water and discovered a whole other world... One I’d only ever seen in photographs before.
It was remarkable.
What impressed me most was we didn’t get bogged down in the technicalities of how deep we were diving or how much oxygen was left.
We just got on with it. This day was all about taking action and making it happen.
I was so impressed at how they took a sport like that (which let’s face it, we shouldn’t even be down there in the first place) and made it accessible to everyone and FAST.
That’s always been my philosophy with eBassGuitar.
Taking your first ‘open water bass dive’ is one of the keys to connecting with the bass and make discovering the ‘low end’ world.
