What's your name, where are you from, and how long have you been playing the bass guitar?
Thomas: My name is Thomas Thye. I’m 57 and have lived in Denmark near the German border for over 14 years, though I was born in Germany. I dabbled with bass, keyboard, and drums as a teenager and first learned guitar at 12. My bass journey really began in 2016 when an old friend asked if I’d like to play bass in his band. I figured, “Why not?” and bought a used bass and amp to give it a go. That invitation reignited my love for music, and I haven’t looked back.
Can you tell us about your musical background and what inspired you to pick up the bass guitar?
Thomas: I started with music early on, playing piano and guitar as a child. My first “gig” was at our secondary school graduation, where I played guitar alongside classmates in a small band. After school, I stopped for a while but later returned to guitar and keyboard, playing for myself and my kids. When I got the offer to play bass in a band called SINCE, I immediately fell in love with the instrument, especially the way it connects with the drums. Sadly, the band split up, but we’d still get together for annual gigs for about six years. In 2022, I joined a garage band that plays cover songs, and it’s been fantastic to be part of a group again.

When and what made you join The Bass Lab PLUS?
Thomas: Over the past few years, I wanted to improve my bass playing, so I searched for resources online. I came across Bass Lab PLUS and saw several videos that really resonated with me. In October 2023, I decided to join permanently after watching many lessons. Bass Lab PLUS felt like the structured, supportive environment I needed to push my skills forward.
Which specific lessons or features of the program have you found most beneficial?
Thomas: I started with the "Ultimate Music Theory Boot Camp," and it was invaluable—the course book alone is a fantastic resource. Then in January, I joined the 16-week "Hear It Play It" pilot course, which was truly eye-opening. The communication with other students, the weekly meetings, and one-on-one sessions with Freddie made it a rich learning experience. It was intense, but every second was worth it, and I learned so much in a short period.
Can you describe your practice routine and how it has evolved since joining Bass Lab PLUS?
Thomas: Before BLP, I’d mostly learn songs for rehearsals whenever I had free time. Now, my practice is more consistent. I keep a bass in both my living room and music room, so I can pick it up anytime. I usually start with warm-ups, like playing the C major scale in triads. If I lose focus, I’ll take a break and come back later. Weekends are my main practice time, and it’s become a relaxing ritual. It’s like that Rolling Stones song, but for me, “I need a bass to keep me happy!”

What specific areas of your bass playing have improved the most?
Thomas: So many areas have improved that it’s hard to pick just one! Before joining BLP, I only played using tabs. Now, while I still use tabs, I’m gradually learning to recognize notes and music theory. I’ve gained a solid understanding of triads, arpeggios, pentatonics, and various scales. This knowledge has been incredibly useful in rehearsals, especially when we’re working on new songs.
What tips or advice would you like to share with fellow bass learners out there?
Thomas: Be open to everything! Explore all types of music genres and try different techniques, like playing with a pick. And don’t shy away from music theory—it can be fascinating once you get into it.
What would you say to anyone thinking of joining the Bass Lab PLUS?
Thomas: Joining Bass Lab PLUS was the best decision I’ve ever made for my bass playing.
