Hey, James here!
A few weeks back, Sian messaged me and said, "I've been working on funk fingers. Do you know about them?" (I didn't!) She then proceeded to tell me, "Well, these are things that you put on your fingers, which make you sound a little bit like Tony Levin. I've been learning to play them." And right there, I just knew we had to make a video about it!
If you don't know about funk fingers, they are a kind of drumstick that attach to the fingers of a bass player for producing percussive, funky sounds on a bass guitar. The idea originated from a song called "Big Time" by Peter Gabriel. It's a very aggressive sound that a lot of the time when people hear it, they emulate it by playing slap bass. But it's actually funk fingers!
So in today's lesson, Sian will teach us how to use these contraptions! She'll share some of her tips, tricks and exercises, and show us how to play the legendary groove to "Big Time" to give us a glimpse on how to start sounding like Tony Levin. 😉
What do you think of funk fingers? Let me know in the comments!
I'll see you next week!
