Every bassist has a moment where the instrument calls their name — for Simon Calverley, that moment arrived somewhere between the church piano, a borrowed bass, and the need to support a worship band that was running out of low-end backup. Originally from Huddersfield and now based in Ashtead, Surrey, Simon’s musical foundation began with childhood piano lessons, giving him a natural ear for harmony, rhythm, and musical structure.
The path to bass began out of necessity rather than ambition. While playing keys in his church band, Simon realized the group depended heavily on a single bassist — so he stepped up, borrowed a bass from a former bandmate, and learned quickly. Six weeks later, he was playing live in front of the congregation. That “jump in and learn on the job” moment became the turning point, showing him just how naturally the bass fit his ear and musical instincts.

Outside of music, Simon is just as active and adventurous. He’s an avid cyclist and skier, heading to the Alps most years for both hobbies — conquering alpine climbs in summer and carving downhill runs in winter. That same energy, discipline, and love for challenge are exactly what fuel his steady growth as a musician.

When he’s not laying down basslines, Simon is carving through the Alps — one of his go-to hobbies each ski season.
Simon has now been a Bass Lab PLUS member for a couple of years, and the progress shows. He has always brought curiosity, discipline, and genuine passion into his playing. Over the past couple of years, he’s steadily built his skills through consistent practice, thoughtful musical exploration, and a real commitment to growing as a bassist. Bass Lab PLUS has simply been a framework to support that journey, but it’s his drive that has taken him where he at right now. His video performances reflect that confidence.

Today, Simon plays regularly with his band In Progress, covering everything from pop and light rock to a dash of punk. He also subs for songwriter Matt Guntrip’s originals band during festival season and continues to serve in his church band on both bass and keys. With each performance, he leans further into the groove, into musical trust, and into a journey he never expected — but now wouldn’t trade for anything.

Quickfire Q&A with Simon
Where are you from?
Originally Huddersfield, West Yorkshire — now living in Ashtead, Surrey, UK.
How long have you been playing bass?
Since the early 2010s (give or take!).
How did your musical journey begin?
With childhood piano lessons around age 6 or 7.
Why bass guitar?
His church only had one bassist — so Simon stepped in to help share the load. Borrowed a bass… and six weeks later was playing live!
What do you do outside of bass?
Plays piano, sings a bit, plays guitar badly (his words!), plus cycling, skiing in the Alps several times a year, and working as a Chemical Engineer. He’s also a dad of four and a proud granddad.
Favorite bassist?
Often Bakithi Kumalo — but it depends on when you ask!
Favorite band?
Green Day.
First song learned?
A worship tune from church — one of the first was Here I Am (I Will Always Love Your Name).
Do you have a band?
Yes! In Progress: a 4-piece pub-friendly pop/light rock band. Dep bassist for an originals band performing Matt Guntrip’s music at festivals. Also plays bass & keys in his church band.
Next bass goal?
Gaining stronger confidence in playing by ear.
How do you stay motivated?
He loves improving, learning new songs each month, and following the structured eBassGuitar courses.
