🎸 From Church Grooves to YouTube Wisdom: A Conversation with Travis Dykes

Hey guys, James here from eBassGuitar.

To celebrate hitting 60,000 subscribers on the eBassGuitar YouTube channel (seriously—thank you!), I’ve put together a special six-part interview series with some fantastic bass players, creators, and musicians from around the online world. These are folks who are out there teaching, sharing, creating—and helping others grow through music.

In this episode, I sat down with Travis Dykes—and man, this was a good one.

🎧 How It All Started

I first came across Travis when I saw his killer cover of Love Theory by Kirk Franklin. The groove, the tone, the way he moves around the instrument—it just hit me. But what really caught my attention was his backstory.

Travis started playing bass in church in Birmingham, Alabama at just 12 years old. Like many gospel musicians, he was thrown straight into the deep end—learning advanced material by ear and being expected to keep up in a live worship environment. No formal teacher, just pure hustle, passion, and community.

🎼 Gospel Roots, Industry Wake-Up

Church taught him feel and improvisation like no textbook ever could. But when Travis stepped into the professional music world, things changed fast. He had to unlearn the flash and chops he’d built up—especially when stepping into genres like CCM, country, and indie.

“The music industry humbled me,” he told me. And he meant it.

Gone were the flashy fills. Now it was about tone, groove, and pocket—playing four chords over and over and still making it feel great. That’s a skill in itself, and one Travis has mastered over the years.

📹 YouTube and the “Unfair Advantage”

What I love most is how Travis took all that experience and turned it into a YouTube channel that’s now helped thousands of players worldwide. He started out like most of us—uploading scrappy videos, not thinking much of it. But one day he looked and saw over 1,000 views on a lesson he forgot he posted.

From there, he got serious—learning about storytelling, content strategy, and production. What set him apart was the mix of gospel knowledge and high-quality video. That’s when things started to really take off.

And he shared a brilliant idea during our chat: “Your unfair advantage.” That thing you might see as a disadvantage—like not having a teacher or gear—might actually be what makes your story unique. That stuck with me.

🥁 Real Talk & Groove

The best part? Travis is exactly the same person off-camera as he is on. Humble, insightful, and driven by a real passion to help musicians grow. We talked about balancing touring and content creation, how church music builds your musicianship, and why teaching forces you to level up.

This one’s packed full of nuggets for bass players at every level.

And make sure to check out the other interviews in this series—like the one with Leland Sklar.

Until next time,
Keep groovin’
James
